Q: I’ve missed the deadline. What happens if my tax return is late?
A: There may be a number of reasons for a late tax return and the ATO understands this. Generally, wage earners getting refunds have little to worry about as the ATO is usually quite lenient. Taxpayers expecting to pay a tax bill may be charged a penalty. The penalty for late lodgment of your tax return is $110 for every 28 days the tax return is late up to a maximum of $550 for a single tax return. Taxpayers with a good lodgment history are usually treated leniently by the ATO and are sometimes not charged the penalty. Interest may also be payable on any tax that is outstanding past its due date. |
